Tarana Dance Academy is one of the leading dance schools in the Chicagoland area, promoting
Indian classical dance amongst new generations, and helping to allow for a more cultured
tomorrow. The goal for the school is not only to promote dance, but to instill both confidence
and discipline within the students. Kathak is known for its ability to preserve the art while
merging with new generation’s music and innovative choreography. Tarana Kathak Dance
Academy also encourages students to cross the boundaries into new areas of dance. Our students
take pride in their dance and rich heritage and have formed a community within the academy.
Today Tarana Dance Academy is one of the most progressive dance schools and known for its
well-received performances. To supplement our performances, the academy will participate in
competitions in which it consistently places high in. Tarana is also frequently invited to many
prestigious international level shows, such as the Windy City Bulls, India Dance Competitions,
and multiple international shows, and at the same time we believe in giving back to the
community, so Tarana is a major participant in multiple charity shows. Every year Tarana tries to
bring something new that not only shows the talent of the students, but passes on inspirational
messages through dance to new generations. Shows like “Krishna’s Message for Human Kind,”,
“Kathak Through the Ages”, “Festivals of India”, “Colors of Rainbows”, “A Project for Peace
and Harmony”, “A Story of the Indian Classical Instruments”, “Ramayana in Sita’s Point of
View”, etc. are examples of unique productions produced by Tarana.
Tarana Dance Academy has a structured curriculum where the students have the opportunity to
learn not only dance, but theory and choreography behind the artform. Many senior students
have become a part of the team today and help to nurture future generations. Tarana’s philosophy
is that knowledge is power, but it must be passed on to survive this beautiful art. The academy
has annual exams that are exclusive to the Tarana Dance Academy. We would like to maintain
our artistic freedom, and therefore we are an independent school with our unique and progressive
curriculum. Although classes are taught in groups, Tarana specializes in the individual
experience of each dancer. Tarana appreciates all forms of dance and is open to the new styles of
dance. Tarana keeps in mind the roots of the dance, but is not afraid to embrace modern styles of
dance like Bollywood as well. Therefore, Tarana also offers Bollywood and folk dance, and is
entering the territory of music as well. The school believes in open communication, which
historically has been the path to success. Today, Tarana is proud to say that we have the most
dance graduates in the Chicago land area for more than three decades and many more to come.
Today, Tarana has more than 17 musician teams in India who exclusively compose music for our
students. Sheetal Dhanani takes a periodic trip to help compose music according to the students
and theme, and bring costumes. Tarana also has uniforms which brings unity to the school.
Tarana works at a very professional level, each class is held in a very professional studio. Tarana
is also equipped with today’s latest technology. We are able to go online in the event of an
unfortunate circumstance to avoid disrupting the student’s training. Today, many students have
finished the curriculum and are thriving in their fields as choreographer in their school, chief
choreographer, dance team leader, and many have entered in the area of teaching as well.
